Last night our ambassadors came back from their trip to Jamaica and sooner than later, I hope to fill you in with the stories and details on our first double feature of the newsletter which I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO. As we continue to change the game in this field, just recognize the cornerstones and what the foundation was built on to make this happen. Its time to get back to working on the newsletter so I will fill you in with the 411 in due time.

BTC Going To Jamaica

Good Afternoon,

For those of you who dont know, four ambassadors alongside with Case Planner Julian will be going to Jamaica to take part in the Manifesto festivities but more importantly plant the seeds of BTC on the Island. During their stay they will be visiting landmarks but using the tools which they have learned at program and share with the youth. The ambassadors will be spending up to week on the island and will be leaving tomorrow so on behalf of the staff and ambassadors of each program, we wish them a safe trip and travel to and back. Make BTC proud and also have fun!!!!!

U.S. report raises doubts over logic of Conservatives’ crime measures

A new report from the U.S. shows a growing number of American states are cutting costs and enhancing public safety through evidence-based correctional and sentencing reforms – and Canadian critics say it’s proof the Conservative government is heading down the wrong path with measures that aim to put more prisoners behind bars for longer periods of time.
The National Governors’ Association Centre for Best Practices study called “State Efforts in Sentencing and Corrections Reform” outlines how the tough economic climate is forcing states across America to rethink long-term criminal justice strategies. The homeland security and public safety division report suggests ways to achieve lower recidivism rates and reduce costs by shrinking prison populations.
“By adopting evidence-based practices and a cross-governmental approach to reform, focusing resources on high-risk offenders, supporting mandatory supervision and treatment in the community and using real-time data and information to drive decisions, states can cut corrections costs while at the same time improving offender outcomes and ensuring public safety,” the report concludes.
Between 2009 and 2010, at least 40 states cut general spending on corrections, with many reconsidering the fiscal consequences of sentencing policies such as truth in sentencing, three-strikes laws and mandatory minimum sentences.

The report points to a “significant body of research” that shows which sentencing and corrections practices work and which ones don’t. Evidence-based practices lead to an average decrease in crime of 10-20 per cent, while programs that aren’t evidence-based see no decrease or even slight increase in crime rates.
NDP MP Francoise Boivin, who sits on the justice committee and serves as the party’s deputy critic, said the report underscores how the Conservative government is taking Canada in the “exact opposite” direction from other jurisdictions that are learning from past mistakes. Instead of adopting programs that are evidence-based, reduce recidivism and have impact, the Conservatives are adopting policies based on ideology, she said.
“They’re going back to what we have had here, and based on our statistics on crime and recidivism, which is way lower here in Canada, it proves the point that our sentencing system has been working well in that we have much fewer people getting out of jail, then coming back,” Boivin told iPolitics. “All the experts are saying not only is it not good sound policy for bringing more public security to the street, it’s actually going to cost so much that in a few years we’ll have to go back.”
The result could be an expensive experiment that puts more offenders into a system that churns out hardened, more dangerous criminals. Boivin predicts the federal government will also face a string of constitutional challenges from provinces, offenders and lawyers.
MPs on the justice committee will begin clause-by-clause review of C-10 after this week’s recess, and Boivin said the NDP will propose amendments to the omnibus bill.
The NGA report finds a growing number of states are adopting sentencing reforms that move non-violent offenders out of the correctional system more quickly, reserving prison space for those who pose a greater threat to public safety. They are also amending criminal codes to find alternatives to incarceration, downgrade offences, repeal or amend mandatory sentencing laws and adopt credit systems to speed-up the release of lower-risk offenders.
Many states such as New York have also overhauled drug laws that led to a surge in convictions and incarceration of low-level drug cases.
Steve Sullivan, executive director of Ottawa Victims’ Services and former federal victims’ ombudsman, said in a time of scarce resources, the Conservative government should be paying more attention to evidence about what does and doesn’t work to protect public safety.
“The report speaks to the evidence base of how we can use scarce resources where they’re needed,” he said. “And from my perspective working with victims, I’d rather spend money on healing children than punishing sex offenders.”
Sullivan said the Conservatives’ solutions are simplistic and popular, and while they might appear to make sense in theory, it’s been proven they don’t work well in practice. The measures play to their base, but dismiss expert evidence from academics and lawyers.
“Who’s going to argue with the notion of keeping a sex offender in prison longer than we are now? A lot of us are parents, and the average person probably doesn’t read the evidence regarding sex offenders, so that’s a very popular notion,” he said. “Having said that, I think governments have a responsibility to balance what it is people are asking for, what the public perceives, with reality. Because the public perception isn’t always that informed.”
University of British Columbia law professor Michael Jackson, the Canadian Bar Association’s spokesman on C-10, said the report shows evidence-based justice reforms reduce prison populations, and lead to safer communities while reducing costs associated with building and operating prison facilities. But the Harper government is “openly contemptuous” of evidence-based research, and is instead crafting public policy based on “counterproductive and demonstrably failed measures” such as mandatory minimum sentences because they are politically popular.
“The U.S. report makes it clear that branding criminal justice as tough on crime is a poor substitute for evidence-based initiatives if public safety and cost effectiveness is your objective,” he said.

Good Afternoon Toronto

As I spend my day in head office going about my rounds I would like to take the time to recap the week for me so I can keep you up to the times as to what's really going on. I must admit that this week has been one filled with productivity which is turning the tide and building my confidence up. I spent a few hours at the Scarborough location which is my third time going there in as many weeks and I could honestly say that its refreshing to take in a new vibe. Also, I attended the Metcalf Foundation meeting which was a brief but good experience as I finally got to see some of the heads who fund programs in the city. My aim from that is to make myself more visible to those who have that position of power the next time around. As for yesterday, I recorded my track for fpyn "Lets Talk Policy" at my new found home to record, Liberty Studios. It was an amazing session and the staff there was very cool and laid back, which is something I like cause I hate to be in a studio where there's so much traffic. Last but not least, today our October edition of the newsletter will be coming out so expect something in your inbox today :).

Wants Vs Needs

Its Approximately noon and I want to share some thoughts or should I say insight as to how we take on this topic. Before any of that though, lets start by definition

WANT-To feel a need or desire for. VS NEED-Circumstances in which something is necessary.

When we take a close look at wants and needs you could see why many people haven't learned how to distinguish the two but over a period of time, we as individuals start to understand whats important to us and what we can live without. I can recall in my younger years which I'm not too far removed from lol where I would place so much emphasis on getting anything I saw which caught my eye. The only problem I faced with that was after the purchase I felt empty. I worked myself up so much in order to get what I bought cause I really felt that I NEEDED it when truthfully it was just something I WANTED. WANTS are things that soothe us cause we're taking the time to spoil and reward ourselves. For instance, buying yourself 4O inch LCD television. Truth be told you could by any size tv and be good with it but if you've been saving for a while to make sure you get it then it's something well deserved. The only question you have to ask yourself about getting a want is are you being overly excessive i.e. buying a pair of shoes every time you get get paid, which is taking up closet space but more importantly, you only have two feet so how much pairs are you really going to wear at one time. Needs differ cause its truly a necessity. You need to buy food to eat, need to pay rent so a roof is over your head, buy tokens,metropass or gas to get around and put clothes on your back cause we aren't living in the days of Adam and Eve.
In conclusion, once we start to separate the two we'll become better spenders and know how to manage our money a lot better than we do now which can lead into other things like budgeting which is also an important thing to know.

How To Groom An Artist Rule 7-10

Welcome back to the work week everybody. I hope you had a good one but its time for me to pick up where I left off in terms of grooming an artist or potential star if you believe so in their ability. So lets back to the program.

Rule #7 PRODUCTION
There are many artists out there who have a great deal of potential but fall short of reaching that level because of the beats they choose to rock over. One must know the sound that they are looking for which best suits their style. Its not to say you cant step out the box and be versatile in your approach incorporating different styles and sub-genres in your music to create something new, but when it comes to building a project you want that cohesive and quintessential vibe all the way through. If you do the research some of the best albums are produced by one man entirely. Look at The RZA. He has produced many of the Clans solo offerings but when they chose to stray from him and go elsewhere, the direction of the music seemed to get lost amidst the shuffle.NO IM NOT SAYIN YOU SHOULD STICK TO ONE PRODUCER, BUT IF YOU HAVE A MAIN ONE...LET HIM GUIDE AND OVERSEE THE DIRECTION YOUR GOING IN SO YOU CAN STAY CONSISTENT WITH YOUR VISION...BTW THIS APPLIES IF WORKING WITH VARIOUS BEATMAKERS ON YOUR PJ AS WELL.

Rule #8 OPEN DISCUSSION
This is the time to talk freely about everything. The conversation doesnt have to be centered around music. You can take this time to talk about everything but and watch the ideas that materialize from it. This is something Im apart of when at the office. The pros of this are building team chemistry as well promoting a culture of getting things done cause your taking the time to establish each one's position but celebrate eachother's strengths.

Rule #9 STRUCTURE
I'm a tell you straight up and down if you dont know how to count bars, or immerse yourself in the songwriting process (verses, hooks and bridges) then you need to do your homework cuz thats something nobody is willing to teach these days. I taught myself how to count through writing and listening to the beat so in all respect you can do it too.

Rule #10 INITIATION
Finally here we have the last rule. This is where you place challenges in front of these artists and see how they respond and react to it. With each challenge you put them through, your able to set them up for whats ahead of them by using the previous nine rules as a way to get them to tap into the unknown. Every artist has hidden qualities that need to be brought to the surface, that could finding a new born enthusiasm, confidence as well as drive. I compare this rule to like joining a fraternity cause you can enter, there's a series of prerequisites and stripes you must get in order to be down with their group. Once these artists can prove themselves, they will be more than ready to make their impact on the game.

Yes its a muggy day out but I told you that I was gonna break some bread with you cats who are looking to be artists in this music game. So im a fill you in on rules 4 to 6 and keep it moving. Sounds good...aiight...take what you need from it and advance.

Rule #4 ARTISTIC FREEDOM

Once you've assessed your artists performance in the booth. Its safe to say that as long they're going to be working alongside you that you let them grow into becoming their own individuals. This is a tricky thing if you don't play your cards right and do it properly. In no way are you to put the artists down as they explore their creativity, but help them to embrace the things that they do pretty well in. During this time you will have a blind eye on them but will offer insight when needed. Never show them whats to come as they will be in anticipation for it but once they come to you and start asking you questions, you can set a benchmark for their progress and see where their confidence level is.

Rule #5 VISION
It's important to get an artist your working with to understand the reasons why they are doing it for. You have dig deeper than the fame and the money. Ask them things to get their brain going like who are they going to cater to ?, is their message in line with the way they carry themselves out in the public, what type of impact are they looking to make and who can help push that vision to the masses. This rule is nothing easy cause even established artists go through these motions in their own careers. Case In Point **Lupe Fiasco-- Having his "Lasers" album pushed back to the point where fans signed a petition and stood in front of Atlantic Records offices demanding a release date. Although the album came out, Lupe himself wasn't satisfied with the project. SO FOR ALL OF YOU LOOKIN TO HAVE A MAJOR BACK YOU...GOOD LUCK...BETTER HOPE A RAPPER SIGNS YOU TO HIS IMPRINT OR DO THE RESEARCH, SMASH THE GAME AND GO INDIE...MORE DOUGH FOR YOU AT THE END OF THE DAY.

Rule #6 RHYME TRAINING

This is by far one of the best things to participate in when your developing an artist or being developed. I dont care what anybody says when I say this, you aint no EMCEE if you havent been BATTLE TESTED or worked your way up through the ranks. Speaking from my experience, I've had ppl who dont even spit who I grew up with come at me and drop lines and expect me to pick up where they left off. It was a way for them to tell me I gotta stay sharp. It was an excercise that was fun cause the more confident I got, it was nothing for me to step in a cypher and eat food like no tomorrow. Now I can spit off the top as if I wrote it, You dont wanna see me in one of those zones cause when I am its on. Best methods for this...freestyling *make it an effort to do so about random topics, the more you do it the better you will become.

And as more countries are starting to follow suit with whats going on, It's pretty safe to say that people are fed up and the 1% vs 99% theory is starting to prove itself as it clear as day and obvious there's a widening gap between the rich and the poor. Now lets flip things up a for a bit and put this thought into your head.... What if all the agencies who are on the chopping block decided to occupy City Hall because of the mass overload of change that Mayor Ford wants to bring to his vision of Toronto. One of Socialized Losses and Privatized Profits hmmm...just a thought to leave you with for the rest of the day. (Think about it)

How To Groom An Artist Pt.1

Today I'm a do something out of the ordinary from my usual postings but I feel that this is something that artists can use to help develop individuals who looking at music as their profession of choice. Many dont know but for those who do I'm apart of Toronto's hip hop community and been recording since the age of 15. I can honestly say that I didnt have many people to show me what was good when I started my musical career from the artistic side of things until a little later but what i did learn along the way, I used to break bread with others who were in the same position as me.
HOW TO GROOM AN ARTIST YOU ASK...I CAN PUT YOU ON TO THAT. One of my favorite artists who does an exceptional job at this is none other than Ghostface Killah. He has proved that you can use artists under your wing and make a solid LP. However before any of that there's some things you have to take into consideration if your trying to build something cohesive.
Rule # 1 ASSESS THE TALENT AROUND YOU
- This rule is one of importance as its not about working with the hottest people but rather those who can compliment your style. Be very meticulous in your approach and take it as one of a coach. When doing this you can figure out who suits what and play off their strengths. In the world of a coach, the assessment provides them insight to their players but also gives the flexibility to draw up situational line-ups. In this case you may have an artist who's laid back so for you to maximize his potential you would put him on something along those lines instead of a hard record. (play chess).
Rule # 2 YOUR WORK ETHIC
If your the head of a rhyme camp, its vital that you let each member see your conduct in the studio as each member follows the direction of their leader. And if youre a good one , those characteristics will show when they venture out to do their own project.Also let them know that the studio is a place of work not one to idle.SO IF THAT MEANS NO LIQUOR OR WEED DURING RECORDING, ENFORCE IT SO THE STANDARD IS SET AND EXPECTATIONS CAN BE MET. YOU CAN HAVE TIME FOR ALL THAT GOOD STUFF AFTER THE SESSION.
Rule # 3 MECHANICS
Anybody who spits must understand wordplay, delivery, and breathing patterns are essential before getting into the booth. Not only does this keep you on point but allows you to work on your cadence.Once you become confident in your ability to execute your bars, you will see a natural progression as well as find ways to manipulate your flow over certain beats.

Its Been A Long Time

I know i've been ignoring you for so long cause I havent dropped a posting in a pretty long while but rest assured once i get back into the flow of things I will be dropping posts constantly not for the sake of it but in efforts to build this blog up to where it should be. First thing first is, I need more followers and I must admit this is something I'm not really that great at doing. Even with my twitter account which is @thedeanofhiphop I think I only have about 30 followers though I've been on the site for a year. Truth is, I really didnt start using the site until about July cause I never really saw the point in it even though its one of the better sites to get your point across. For a while i've been in the eye of a storm having to get back all my identification and taking care of some personal matters but through the whole ordeal which has opened my eyes a whole deal made me realize enough is enough. Some things just arent options anymore and cause of that reason, I will not be held back by anybody or the environment I know a little too well. When time runs its course and you've outgrown certain things, they only way to rid yourself of that vibe is move on to the next. As I recognize this transitional phase i'm going through, I understand what is needed of me and how I need to carry myself from here on out. I needed a wake up call and I got it. So now that I got it, its time to really key in and focus. For the longest time I been in "the hood'' getting my energy sucked out of me. Some people just dont understand the effect a place like that can have on you especially when your mind is so far removed from the things you used to hold high. Now that those things dont entice me, I've been faced with obstacles that would try to bring me back to that element but I came to far to slip up and ruin the progress i'm making, so i'm a stay in line with my beliefs and move accordingly. We all have our breaking point moments where it feels as if your in a room full of darkness but once you can make out that dim light in the room, its on you to chase that light and break those walls down cause truth be told, we should aspire or look to be in the light. Good Morning Toronto

Today is the last day of August and the best month of the year is going to start so for all my virgos this one is for you. Things have been real crazy out here in Rexdale with a number of shootings but the strategy of an outreach worker is to be involved and provide resources to the communities in need at this time. As for myself living in the area and being a front line worker based on residence alone, means I have to be on point and watch for my own safety first and foremost cause when there's war in the streets, people don't care who you are or if you have nothing to do with whats going on; they just want blood to be spilled. Over the last few weeks I've been putting my energy into new things like trying my hand in music production which to me has given me the tag as a double threat. I've been putting together some crazy loops but once I'm fully confident in my abilities to make beats, the window of opportunity will be much bigger than before cause I can go another route. The best way to explain the window is like having that pie on the windowsill cooling down, if the window is wide enough you can jump through and snatch the pie as along with it. What I'm trying to get across is that when the window's open you can either shut it, put your head through smell the fresh air and step out into the world and explore.

We're just about near the end of August and as students across the country are getting ready to go to school, we at BTC have a lot on our plate as a unit and individually. We all have goals that we're trying to achieve in our personal lives that will help us a great deal when it comes to our future. What do we have to do to ensure that those goals are being met and whats the next step after the goal is met ?. My personal struggle as of this moment is being where I am. When I say that I'm talking about where I live. It hasn't stopped me from achieving goals that I set out but when you check out mentally from your surroundings but your in the same environment, you start to feel uncomfortable and get down on yourself at times cause in your heart you know you should be further in life. My bday is approaching in a couple of weeks and my whole M.O. is not to be a nice guy anymore but an honest one so if people get offended by that, there's not much I can do. No more beating around the bush and sugarcoating.

In this version of I & I (which is the first one I would like to add) I'm going to put the spotlight on our placement student at our East location, Camilla, and share with you her thoughts and time at the program. For those who don't know, being a placement student has its ups and downs but offers plenty of experience for those who take on the position. The reasons for coming here are just like every other student. " I wanted to learn if this was the field for me, working with youth. I felt it was a good opportunity" says Camilla. However, upon entering an environment with high-risk youth, the hardest thing for any student is finding their comfort zone and where they fit in but Camilla didn't find it too hard cause of the support from the team around her. " Zohra and Julian were very welcoming, gave me tasks to feel busy and suggested to stay out of problems". With that being said, one looking from the outside in doesn't really have an idea of what placement students are exposed to without making inaccurate or exaggerated assumptions but to the credit of Camilla and those who were in the same position before her, staying dedicated and showing a willingness to learn has provided her with valuable lessons and priceless experience which she can be carried into the classroom; so it's safe to say she has the "one up" on those who are considering going down the same career path. " By the end of the program I hope to leave with the skills necessary to deal with youth and help them break their cycle. But honestly, I don't want my time here to end".

A Great Man...Gone But Not Forgotten

When I found out the news about Jack Layton's passing, I was at home getting ready for work and seen it on twitter via blackberry. I'm not whose really into following politics heavy but I do cover things like provincial, federal and municipal elections from time to time when they occur and I can honestly say that over the last few years that Mr.Layton help put the NDP on the map in a significant way. Once a party that couldn't win a lot of seats in parliament has now become the opposition for the 'tories at the house of commons. Mr. Layton's dedication and passion towards making a better Canada will be remembered by those in his party and Canadians across the country. Even our PM weighed in and shared his thoughts on the leader and had nothing but good things to say about him. Here's Jack Layton's last letter to Canadians

Dear Friends,

Tens of thousands of Canadians have written to me in recent weeks to wish me well. I want to thank each and every one of you for your thoughtful, inspiring and often beautiful notes, cards and gifts. Your spirit and love have lit up my home, my spirit, and my determination.

Unfortunately my treatment has not worked out as I hoped. So I am giving this letter to my partner Olivia to share with you in the circumstance in which I cannot continue.

I recommend that Hull-Aylmer MP Nycole Turmel continue her work as our interim leader until a permanent successor is elected.

I recommend the party hold a leadership vote as early as possible in the New Year, on approximately the same timelines as in 2003, so that our new leader has ample time to reconsolidate our team, renew our party and our program, and move forward towards the next election.

A few additional thoughts:

To other Canadians who are on journeys to defeat cancer and to live their lives, I say this: please don’t be discouraged that my own journey hasn’t gone as well as I had hoped. You must not lose your own hope. Treatments and therapies have never been better in the face of this disease. You have every reason to be optimistic, determined, and focused on the future. My only other advice is to cherish every moment with those you love at every stage of your journey, as I have done this summer.

To the members of my party: we’ve done remarkable things together in the past eight years. It has been a privilege to lead the New Democratic Party and I am most grateful for your confidence, your support, and the endless hours of volunteer commitment you have devoted to our cause. There will be those who will try to persuade you to give up our cause. But that cause is much bigger than any one leader. Answer them by recommitting with energy and determination to our work. Remember our proud history of social justice, universal health care, public pensions and making sure no one is left behind. Let’s continue to move forward. Let’s demonstrate in everything we do in the four years before us that we are ready to serve our beloved Canada as its next government.

You need to be at the heart of our economy, our political life, and our plans for the present and the future.

And finally, to all Canadians: Canada is a great country, one of the hopes of the world. We can be a better one – a country of greater equality, justice, and opportunity. We can build a prosperous economy and a society that shares its benefits more fairly. We can look after our seniors. We can offer better futures for our children. It's the voice back with another installment, my only question is do you miss me ?. If so, i missed you too if not it doesn't bother me but I would like you to stay in tune. My apologies for not dropping something everyday but things are starting to look promising so I'm just trying to keep myself busy and run with the opportunities once it comes in my direction. Its a gloomy day out and I think that i've told you before that the weather affects my day but the beat goes on like U.R.V would say and one monkey dont stop no show so lets get down to the proceedings before we enter into the afternoon stages of the day. A lot of new things on deck with the new group. The girls are currently in there second day of CPR/first aid training which is pretty cool actually considering that its usually done a few months later rather than the first month in. Our August newsletter is in the works as well and will be ready for you in the next couple weeks so please stay tuned. As for myself, I'm just chillin' out but I'm mad tired. Been wide awake since 3 a.m. I really hope by the middle of the day I don't get the urge to wanna fall asleep or take a lengthy power nap cause the day is going pretty slow to tell the honest truth. Here's a couple things to take into consideration or some options that you have
- go to a local pool for a swim
- stay indoors if you have problems breathing
- watch the news to find out where the cooling centres are, depending on where your located at any point in the day so you can find yourself at one
- Or you can do what I usually do at times like this, come out for a bit once the sun dies down. It may be hot still but the breeze no matter the condition is one we all welcome.

There's days when your pushed to be on the frontlines and others when your role is reduced to behind the scenes but thats the way how I like to operate; no added pressure just a lane for me to create and get some work done. Last night was a very gratifying one to say the least as I attended the production AWAKE for the Fringe Festival. I really feel that it was well put together from start to finish and the testimonies from everybody who was involved and played by the characters we're incredible. I had a big smile on my face when the character who was playing the role as me was using pieces from my interview as well as other members of BTC. I would like to thank Laura and Chris for putting together such a wonderful show and Roshanak for lining us up with the tickets. To all of the actors.actresses, you done a great job and should be proud of yourself cause the stories which are being shared and brought to the light gives us hope and reinforces that there is good in our respective areas not to mention shed some light on the life being lived and the struggles that many of the youth face across the city.

Once again it's on and I'm a get straight to the point. There was a lot going on in the city on the weekend like Salsa on St.Clair as well as AfroFest and i didnt get to attend either so by now you should know how my weekend was...a four letter "s" word is a pretty accurate assumption to describe everything in a nutshell. What good came out of this weekend...I dunno, I seen some old friends, reunited with a few who I haven't heard or seen in years for a brief period of time and somebody I went to elementary with commented on my interview with cbc radio which was cool. Speaking of that I would like to thank Robin Brown for taking the time to interview me ahead of the Fringe festival and CBC radio for their efforts in reaching out to the community.

CURRENTLY OFFERED PROJECTS

PACTBuild Construction Project - Etobicoke South (Royal York & Queensway): This introductory woodworking and construction project building such things as garden sheds and bird houses to be installed across PACT’s urban gardens and reforestation plots, as well as sold on the PACT website to raise funds for the charity now runs on Saturdays from 10am-4pm in a fully equipped professional tool shop located at 101 Portland Ave..

PACT Haunted Theatre Project - Etobicoke South (Royal York & Queensway): Our newest and most wicked project introducing youth to the entertainment world of set and prop building, special effects and make-up, as well as character development and acting, all to support a charity haunt operation with proceeds going back to support PACT, now runs on Sundays from 11am-3pm also in our Woodworking shop located at 101 Portland Ave. Please note, opportunities to volunteer at different events (some on weekends such as Rib Fests) where our haunted house is set-up will also be available

PACTFilm Summer Project – Downtown & Across Toronto (based out of YMCA Head Office-42 Charles St. East): The PACTFilm summer project will start with a planning meeting on Monday July 4^th at 6pm at the YMCA Head office in Room 4A. Film shoots will take place across Toronto on different dates and at different times throughout the summer. We will be producing PSAs to be screened in the TTC system as well as working on other projects and themes.

PACTFarm and Grow to Learn Summer Gardening Project – Etobicoke & Central Toronto (multiple locations- see below): PACT needs lots of help and hands to tend to all of our schoolyard and community gardens over the summer. Please see locations and set days and times for each garden below- other days may be added by each Garden Manager and be advised that gardens may be closed on certain days depending on weather conditions so always call ahead.

Ø West Humber C.I Garden (1675 Martin Grove Road- Finch Ave. W. & Martin Grove Rd.) - This garden will be supervised and open to volunteers on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 11am-5pm.

Ø Elmbank Junior Middle Academy Garden (10 Pittsboro Dr.- Finch Ave. West & Martin Grove Rd.) - This garden will be supervised and open to volunteers on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am-12pm.

Ø Emery C.I Garden (3395 Weston Road- Weston Rd. & Finch Ave. W.) – This garden will be supervised and open to volunteers on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10am-5pm.

Ø Thistletown C.I Garden (20 Fordwich Crescent- Islington Ave & Albion Rd.) This garden will be supervised and open to volunteers on still to be determined.

Ø Lakeshore C.I Garden (350 Lakeshore Blvd.- Lakeshore Blvd & Kipling Ave.) This garden will be supervised and open to volunteers on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am-3pm.

Ø Sir Sandford Fleming Academy Garden (50 Ameer Ave.- Allen Rd. & Ranee Ave @ Yorkdale subway) This garden will be supervised and open to volunteers on most weekdays from 10am-4pm.

Ø PACTFarm Community Garden (3879 Bloor Street W in Etobicoke. (Corner of Bloor and Acorn)) This garden will be supervised and open to volunteers on still to be determined.

PACTFashion Designer Project - Downtown West (Lansdowne & Bloor St. West): A real world sewing and design project that makes designer bags and clothing/dresses for under privileged and homeless recipients as well as being sold on the website to support PACT with a portion of the profits going back to the youth. The next session of this project will start on Monday July TBD, 2011 (only 2 spots open) and will run for seven weeks on Mondays from 6pm-9pm.

I would like to say that I honestly feel like I was ignoring the idea of dropping a post but as I get back into the swing of things again, I know that in honing my skills in the it's important for me to continually stay active whether i'm on the keyboards or using ink. For those who been following whats going on in the city, the fringe festival opened up its festivities with the play Awake written by Chris Tolley and Laura Mullin. I would like to extend a congrats with all their efforts, the support they given me, the Expect Theatre team and cast for making it happen and the tickets for BTC youth. Things at the office have been pretty quiet but work is still getting done, just on different levels. When your agency is facing an issue like this cause many are right now, the best thing to do is create work for yourself. Sit down as a group, discuss alternatives, take on the assignments and pull through. Things may have slowed down a bit but i dont think its good for anybody to let it become stagnant. The Waiting Process

Boy its really been a long time since I last dropped a posting and I'm sorry but sometimes we allow life to take over and situations get the best of us but rest assured it's back to the biz. Our last program and extension piece have been done for quite some time now but lemme fill you in on the skinny as to whats been going on in the area and the program itself. For starters, there have been a number of shootings in the Rexdale community including the death of a 15 year old youth who was dearly loved by the neighbourhood . I've been sitting in on many meetings on how to tackle these issues and give youth of the area an alternative but when you get disregarded and you know the ins and outs but "protocol" has to be followed by other partners makes things difficult especially when working together cause they just have to deal with their agenda and once they meet that they're good, whereas I gotta go back to the frontlines and have to explain why some of them havent got jobs and more importantly our safety.
As far as the intake process, we've done many interviews and all but the process is being put on hold because the contract hasnt been siogned to start a new group. We can knock, scratch, pull and try to strongarm Service Canada as much as we want but its not their fault why the show hasn't hit the road. We aren't gonna point fingers but we do know that this issue is out of our control , this is a thing that the feds gotta deal with and get corrected before we can go any further.
I've been accustomed to waiting over the years as there was always an issue about securing funding for next groups but this serves to be one of the most crucial moments in the program's existence. As we move forward the fingers are crossed and hopefully things turn out for the better cause as you know it, the weather is real nice but that can lead to a whole bunch of mess especially when you got young males and females with nothing to do.

Good Afternoon T.O

So many things have been going on in the city this week that I gotta summarize and condense things quickly for all of you who are reading. The first thing I want to talk about is the switch that will have a lot of our city workers out of a job. If you dont know, the city councillors voted unanimously 32-13 to switch to the world privatization when it comes to dealing with the garbage. I understand that the mayor is a big supporter for privatization, but on the flip side, whats gonna happen to those who hold positions picking up our city's trash since contracts are going to be given to companies. Next on the list is Caribana having to change its name due to a ruling from the Ontario Superior Court.The court ruled late last week that the mid-summer festival can no longer operate under the Caribana name because the title is trademarked by a group that founded the event but no longer runs it. A new name will be unveiled on the 25th of May. My only thing with the name change is, people are so used to calling it Caribana that it wont make a difference at the end of the day. A name change is better than no parade at all. Last but not least, the Jordan Manner's verdict. As I got home it was on CP24 as breaking news and it said the two were not guilty. From a writer's standpoint you gotta look at it like this, a mother lost her son and is feeling that justice wasn't served and on the other hand, the two men who were charged lost four years of their life and finally get some freedom to go home to their family. Now lemme switch hats and put on one for the "hood" as a critical thinker. These men are free to go home but people will look to seek retribution so don't be suprised if anything were to happen...I'm just sayin. Our community is under so much scrutiny, that it's time we smarten up cause as long as we are apart of the city, and we will be, its time to show people that we're better than what they think and not live up to their expectations.

Its a cloudy day out here and I'm thinking to myself what is there to really do. Sometimes boredom gets the best of me and other times I'm highly motivated but today for some reason I feel a little drained. My time and energy has been spent on helping others, which is a good thing,; a selfless act you can say but I need to get back to taking care of myself before I put myself in the line of fire again. I dunno if I have told you but May has been a month where my anxiety kicks in because of what happened in my past. I've identified this moment to be one of trauma more than anything so I look for new ways and alternatives to deal with this as I move forward

I woke up this morning and wasnt in the best of moods but the weather is good for now and cause of that I'm a keep my head high. We are in the last stages of the internship before we put the show on the road and start the intake process for next group. For those who have been apart of the internship and extension, the tools that they are learning will pay mighty dividends for 'em in the long run. As for myself...what have I been doing lately you ask ?, a little bit of everything. Playing an active role in the extension as well as putting the finishing touches on our first newsletter. My goal right now is to keep myself active in my work or as "G" would say, live an artists lifestyle. It's the only proven way to keep me out of a funk when things don't look too bright for me. Good Morning Toronto If you've been following the news lately, I'm pretty sure that you heard there will be an election coming up shortly. When the last election was all said and done, voters, members of parliament and political parties with the exception of the Tories, were gunning hard for a minority government and got what they wanted as the tories won, but not enough seats to have a majority.When you do have a minority government you can expect things like this to happen (early elections) cause eventually the people your working with to run the government need to be included in the process of passing bills and law making but you can start to lose the support of your own party as key figures can jump ship. Canadians are going to be mad with all the money thats being spent to go into this but when all the smoke is clear, will these make for a better Canada?... we'll just have to wait. Voice of the Mega

Good Morning Toronto I dont want to kill you with how my weekend went but I will comment on graduation for the youth ambassadors and what we went through to make sure that they group had a day to remember on Friday. Like any day of significance, there's a whole lot of run around and boy did we do a lot of that.From leaving the office and travelling across the city to pick up the food, buy groceries, and find our way there to set up the space was very stressful but rewarding. I want to give a shout out to the graduating class and wish them the best in their future endeavours. Also, all our partners who were in attendance, the student placements and my co-workers. It was a hell of a ride and now we look to reignite a stronger flame for the two month extension and six month program to follow up. Voice of the Mega

What can I say about today as of this moment...ummm...lemme think. I'm so annoyed. Pissed off. Not in the mood for anybody's &^%$. You wonder why I feel like this, @#%& the reasons just know I'm on edge.
Today is the group's grad and its been a long but quick six months. As for the group as a whole, I dunno what can be said. Individually, nice people..once you get to know them but at this time, I really dont know what to say about them collectively.
I only go as hard as those who go hard themselves so I wish could have seen more desire in some of the youth. For those who I've witnessed put there best efforts forth, congrats to you all and I hope to work and get it in with you in the future.
Today maybe a big day for the ambassadors but we lost a pioneer in Dudley Laws so its time to pay homage to those who put down serious groundwork for the city.
I know sometimes I'm given the &^%$ and the stick for my honesty but middle finger everyone of you who feel I do my thing effectively, wanna catch feelings, or feel like I owe you anything. I will no longer invest in people who dont put that same energy back into me. What the @!$# do people think, I'm a hold their damn hand every *&%^$#@ chance they get and when there on their feet, go their own ways. Sorry to burst bubbles but deakl with it. Today when I got up in the morning I came across one of those free newspapers that you see in the bus on my kitchen table and there was a very interesting article. This article had to deal with the pay rates of minorities in the workforce and before I go off and vent about what I've read, it's only right for me to hit you up with the key findings that were published in this report.

* In 2006 during the boom years, visible minorities had an unemployment rate of 8.6 per cent, compared with 6.2 per cent for white Canadians

*Visible minorities are over represented in the hard-hit light manufacturing sector, with many precarious low paid jobs, but under represented in public administration, where 92 per cent of workers are white.

* In 2005, the average full time, full year employment income for visible minorities was $ 43, 979 compared with $ 52,345 for white workers.

Ok lets just say you're in the matrix as we call it at work, what would you be doing to make up for the time that your losing.

Whenever my inspiration to do things is low chances are more likely than not im either overwhelmed or preoccupied with something that takes my mind.
**THE REMEDY**
- Knowing that the problem has a lot to deal with my own productivity, I go to build myself back up by going back to my basics, the things I love to do as it should be for yourself.

Me I write. I didnt one day decide to become a blogger and put up some nonsense that dont apply to your life on my page. If the opportunity for this hadn't been given to me, I wouldn't seriously have this. Always heard about the craze of it but didnt see how it would work for me at first but that til months later but whatever back to the deal...Like I was sayin before, yeah I write whether that be rhymes,articles and other miscellaneous what have you's. This post today may even be the springboard for me to finish up sum material I was working on. This can get me feeling good about work as I come back into the office tomorrow and build with the ambassadors, wrapping up their personal compass and there you see the positive spin off from this. Me personally outside of this, I need to get in a zone many dont understand but look at with inquiring minds. They would like to know but for some reason there mind is already made up while for others its more or less there gonna watch your every move and make your business their own.
I know whats required of me, I just have to listen.

Its freshly twelve on the dot and i'm here at the office doing my thing. As the time goes by i sit here with many things on my mind that i would like to carry out but its kind of difficult when there's only one computer for use and you got staff trying to share time equally for it. There's roughly six weeks of program left and in the next two weeks the group will be headed to ropes but as of now they are completing their CPR training.On a bright note, I fnally taped back together my rhymebook. It may seem a little off the topic but I had all my notes in that book besides verses, so i feel well relieved at the thought that I dont have to sit and try to put it all together again. Things have been a little slow as of late but its time to do an innovators job and create something outta nothing. I'll keep youy posted for whats in store.

Its been a couple weeks since my last post and during that time so many things have happened. For starters, its february and that means black history month but four days in the shortest month of the year, the black community has taken two serious blows. If you dont know what has taken place then I guess you need to understand what's goin on and how it will affect us in the long-run especially for those who look to the arts to make a living. This is supposed to be a time where we enlighten the world about our culture but here we are mourning the loss of CKLN radio and FLOW 93.5. As I logged on to my facebook and saw members of the music community share their opinions in the news feed, i thought to myself what do you gotta do now to make it or even get a little exposure. When it comes to the hip-hop game out here, there are diamonds in the rough but you gotta sift through so much "try a ting" and trendy rappers on the RZA explained R&B "rappin bullshit" tip that the integrity of whats being released whether it be on torontorappers.com, you tube and other outlets isnt even mediocre at best. As for the artists who are looking to set trends and help to the infastructure of our scene, the question at hand is what's next ?. Do true artists have to compromise themselves to get spins on top 40 stations or resort to makin music for some of our heralded atcs like avril lavigne, fefe dobson, etc (only if they get the chance)I dunno. As an artist this wont stop me from doing what i've been doin' cause the truth is I been makin records before flow's inception, noty too sure bout ckln but hey, its time now to do some research and find the loopholes, one thing that we as artists havent found out yet over here and how to work it to our advantage. I really couldnt tell you but I will say this, they dont want us to excel in our craft out of fear that they will have no control. We lost Caribana to corporate sponsoring and both of these stations so what will they try to take from us next?.

Its really been a while and the honest truth is I'd have to say it was needed. I guess for that time period, life itself was taking me places and showing me things that had it never slowed down or in my mind for a second, chances are I would have had no time to think about it. So as I absorbed the thought of the reality which was always there,it made things difficult cause much of the day was spent on dealing with that and less on what i actually needed to be doing. When your in a position like that, you look to different sources to build yourself up but you cant always do that; Your left with yourself at the end of the day.

I've been up from about six taking care of things trying to get it altogether for the day. Yup, another one at Breaking The Cycle...where something new is learned everyday. What could I say, its a place where I get inspired and lend my services to those who need it. For those of you who didnt know,Crown-A-Thornz shot a scene for their video at the building on Saturday. Nothing too big just a one shot and out but Gary, the PJ Coordinator had a cameo cause they wanted to do it at a non-profit setting which was cool so shouts to them for coming through and Andrew for lining up the whole thing.
As much as I've been writing I got to get back to my songs for a while cause I got some beats I need to complete but I just been a little out of it. Also I received a job posting that I definetely hoping to pursue and win cause it suits my expertise and strength.
Anyways I just wanted to hit you up bright and early as well as encourage you all to try and start your day earlier, it's really a time saver.

Fresh off the Long Weekend

G-AFTERNOON TORONTO

It's a bright but chilly day out here and as the sun is shining through to the office where I'm located, I zone out. For no apparent reason other than the one that I like to escape the reality I'm apart of to find a little time to myself in my own which I've created. We at the office are coming off a long weekend..mainly the ambassadors and myself I could say cause I didn't have to attend the training meeting but I feel tired and I'm so hungry. Feel like I got the wind knocked out of me but anyway. The Giants won and a well deserved win it was. Edgar Renteria, Mr. Clutch, he's proved it many times in his career (Florida, St.Louis and now San Fran)which is very impressive cause he was never the star on any team. Raptors lost which was a good game and I think the Leafs are on tonight so I'm good. I got some things I need to take care of so right now its all about going through the procedures of the process. Sometimes I wished I apply this on the everyday cause every now and then, more often than not, I'm working under pressure. It's not a problem but the idea of creating a little chaos in order to operate at a level is pretty intriguing. I guess you use your brain a little more and come up with unusual solutions to problems and find your way out of things. I dunno... don't mind me... I'm just giving you something to think about for a minute.

THE NEED FOR HOUSING FOR ABORIGINALS

The lack of social housing for Toronto’s Native community has been a chronic problem for years, says Wigwamen director Angus Palmer.

“We have hundreds of Aboriginal households on a waiting list,” Palmer said. “And it hasn’t gotten any smaller. I’d say it’s gotten larger.”

In 2006, the city reported Natives account for 16% of the homeless in Toronto. At the same time, they represent less than 1% of the city’s general population.

“The income profile of people in the Aboriginal community is much lower than the general population, which makes it very difficult to be able to afford decent housing in Toronto,” he said.

Wigwamen Inc. has run social housing properties for Ontario’s Native population for almost 40 years.

The agency currently has more than 400 units in its social-housing stable, including a 92-unit apartment complex and a building for seniors. It has become

one of the largest providers for city-dwelling Natives in Canada, and is second only to the Toronto Community Housing Corp. (TCHC) in Toronto. Palmer said the houses Wigwamen is scheduled to soon buy from TCHC will be well-managed: Staff will do quarterly fire inspections, general home inspections and see to regular maintenance, such as the fixing of appliances

and structural repairs.

Palmer said Wigwamen has reached out to the communities where the 20 houses it is buying from TCHC are located and has received positive feedback.

“The neighbours I’ve spoken with are happy that something is finally being done with the (houses),” he added. “They don’t want the units to be left vacant ... so we’re promising to fix them up and fill them with families.”

Wigwamen sets its rates based on tenants’ take-home pay; typically, 30% of a tenant’s household goes toward rent.

CITY WARD BREAKDOWN

Ward by ward election results show mayor-elect Rob Ford swept suburban Toronto but was rejected in most downtown neighbourhoods.

George Smitherman won only 13 wards but all are clustered around the city's centre.

In his old stomping ground of Toronto Centre-Rosedale, where he served a decade as MPP, Smitherman racked up 10,000 more votes than Ford.

But the farther away from the city's core, fewer votes were avaialble for the former deputy premier.

Ford dominated his home turf of Etobicoke - where Smitherman was also raised - and crushed his opponent in Scarborough.

North York went heavily for Ford as well.

Since Rob Ford won the mayoral race, a lot of people especially those in the arts are wondering where they will fit in when it comes to the plans that Ford has for the city. To tell the truth I wish I knew myself what would take place but just like you I have to wait and see whats gonna pop off. As workers in this field go through the shift one is left to wonder when the rebellion is going to take place. In the world of politics it seems impossible to live up to promise you make and satisfy everyone but I feel in this situation we as citizens of Toronto are facing, many of us will be dissapointed and already are with the result, so what can we expect during his term as the big dog in the city. How much jobs are going to be lost in the next four to eight years. What taxes are going to be eliminated and what strategies are going to be implemented to enhance Toronto's growth and development. Does the arts industry have a future and are programs going to be funded ?. I find this stuff very interesting and look to hear your feedback so drop a note if you can.

Have you ever noticed during any election while candidates and parties are laying their groundwork down, they find the time to slander their opposition. In America you see it a lot with the Democrats and Replubicans, same follows for the Tories and the Grits. However, for our mayoral race we have three different candidates going at it to run the city who are very different from each other. Once their background is determined and the research is done, teams go for the jugular in order to secure votes and potentially take others supporters. The world of politics is a crazy one and people will do and say whatever to assassinate your character whether that be religious, your past, or sexual orientation...its really no holds barred.

As y'all know today is the day where a new mayor will take over the reigns of this city and lead us into the future. For all of those who are of age its important to make your voices be heard cause this have a serious impact on our lives. Yesterday one of my friends was like the way how they go about elections here isnt proper but i told him to take in where we live. I bet if I was downtown like lets say college street, I would see many signs up but over here there's few. I think the main issue is that people in this community don't really care too much to vote cause they don't see where the help is coming from. Hopefully for this neighbourhood in particular, there will be a good turnout for the polls despite the inclement weather. Yeah its sunny out right now but whose to say how hard its gonna rain after which will keep many indoors following the race on CP24.

For many young people especially those who follow the elements of hip-hop, grafitti art is a true form of expression for the individual whose extremely gifted with the spray paint their can while others feel that the art is straight vandalism and apart of gang culture. But honestly if its such a part of gang culture, why arent these guys exchanging their spray paint for guns...I dunno. They're some people who stand neutral on this cause kids can be doing worse but they offer a solution to it all. One of my friends is a tagger and it would be dope to see if they can make more murals to liven up the community so the area doesnt look intimidating. A man wrongfully convicted of murdering his niece in one of the infamous Dr. Charles Smith cases will be given $4.25 million in compensation, the Dalton McGuinty government has announced.

"On behalf of the government of Ontario, I offer my deepest and most sincere apologies to Mr. Mullins-Johnson and his family for the miscarriage of justice that occurred and the pain they had to endure," Attorney General Chris Bentley says in a statement.

"Mr. Mullins-Johnson has been working hard to rebuild his life and we wish him well as he continues that process."

Mullins-Johnson was charged and convicted in the death of his four-year-old niece Valin Johnson in 1993 based on the evidence of disgraced Ontario forensic pathologist Dr. Charles Smith.

He served a dozen years before he was released on appeal in 2005.

A review of the autopsy found there was no evidence to support the charges against Mullins-Johnson and his conviction was subsequently overturned.

What I been doing though is working on my conflict resolution manual, fixing up an interview article that I gotta hand in and my appointment for trying to secure my spot in school for the fall semester. With so much on my mind these days, its kinda hard not to be overwhelmed by whats happening but I guess i need to humble myself even more and continue to push hard in all that I do. Sometimes i wish certain things never occurred in my life but without it, I dunno how i would be so I should be grateful that i'm able to stand from it and help those who may be going through the same ordeals as me.

Inequality and Life Chances: Going To Jail or Law School

Sociologist Max Weber observed that one’s opportunities, what sociologists call “life chances,” are shaped by our class and status. While we tend to think of success as the sole result of our talent and effort, our social position is in many ways a result of our family’s social status.

Imagine two young men from vastly different backgrounds—both bright, neither exactly sure what direction they want their lives to take. One resides in an impoverished area of Los Angeles in a neighborhood plagued by gangs and violence. The other grows up in Washington, D.C. and attends an exclusive prep school with children of the political elite. Neither is particularly committed to their studies, and both find themselves adrift. Can you guess who ends up in law school and who ends up in prison?

This is not a hypothetical example, but one that attorney Ian Graham details in his memoir, Unbillable Hours: A True Story. The book focuses on Graham’s experience working to free Mario Rocha from prison, who was serving a double-life sentence for a murder he didn’t commit.

Rocha had drifted from being an honors student to skipping school to hang out with his friends, and at fifteen was placed on probation after riding as a passenger in a stolen car. In 1996, when he was sixteen, Rocha attended a party crashed by gang members, who shot and killed an honors student. Rocha wasn’t in a gang, but a party goer identified him as one of the shooters from a photo line-up—where his picture ended up after his arrest the year before. Despite the lack of evidence of a third shooter, Rocha was arrested for murder. (To learn more about the case, watch Mario's Story on DVD).

His mother, who scraped by as a custodian, took out a $17,000 mortgage on her home in order to pay for what the family hoped would be better legal representation than a public defender could offer. But the attorney they hired (who had approached the family soliciting his services) barely did any work on Rocha’s behalf, and he allowed the prosecution to try Rocha along with the two known gang members. Rocha was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

Meanwhile, Graham finished college with what he writes were less than stellar grades and without a clear plan. And yet he was able to secure an entry level job as a staffer on Capitol Hill while he figured out what he wanted to do—a job that someone from Rocha’s background would have a hard time getting even with good grades.

While peer pressure led many in Rocha’s neighborhood to join gangs and drop out of school school, Graham’s friends went to graduate school or got high paying jobs on Wall Street. Feeling like he was “falling behind,” he decided to go to law school and try and figure things out there.

After doing well his first year, large law firms courted Graham with fancy dinners and the promise of a six-figure salary. By his own admission, he had little interest in working for a big law firm but was tempted by the money and found himself working long hours doing mind-numbing work. (The work sounded so dull that after reading about it I actually had a nightmare about being locked in a room all night to analyze documents I couldn’t understand. Anyone who is planning on going into law should read his description of life at a big firm.)

In order to do something that might be more interesting, Graham volunteered to work on one of the firm’s pro bono cases. Coincidentally, the firm had recently agreed to take on Rocha’s case and try and win him a new trial, and the book details how Graham and his colleagues set about to help Rocha gain his freedom. (In 2006 Rocha was released from prison and is now attending college in Washington, D.C.)

Although this story has something of a happy ending—Rocha got out of prison and Graham left the big law firm—it serves as a reminder of the different obstacles and opportunities people might face based on social class.

Their struggles to find a sense of purpose and freedom led each on remarkably different paths. Graham worked crazy hours, pulling many all-nighters to try and manage an impossible workload. But he was well compensated, although shackled by “golden handcuffs” of a big salary that made it difficult to leave the firm. But for Rocha the costs were far higher. His shackles were real, as he spent ten years in a maximum-security prison and endured two brutal stabbings by other inmates. While both eventually found direction, Rocha had lost years of valuable young adult experiences learning to survive on his own. Today he is dealing with many of the same challenges people a decade younger struggle with.

“Mario was at least as bright as I was, possibly more so,” Graham writes, “but he had grown up in the LA barrio, without the opportunities, benefits, and second chances of a privileged upbringing. I wondered how I would have fared growing up in his world, and he in mine.”

A good reminder of how social class impacts our life chances.

In these days and times the social class that your in can put a barrier on the things you want to do rather than being in a positive upbringing. Many times poeple who reside in the inner city who have the potential to do exceedingly great things are overlooked and barely recognized which would drive them mad cause no one wants to take a chance on them. Look at Rocha's case, he had it all, a good family with parents who were up there in the social ladder but a few of his decisions set him back and he now has to face the issue of learning how to survive cause he lost ten years of his life to being behind bars. Its a crazy world that we live in and sometimes we see for ourselves how quickly the tables can turn.

Its a bright sunny day but a little on the chilly side but you know what, it's my favorite season of the year and i love the fact that i can throw on a hoody and a vest with my joggies and hit the streets of our city.I've had a good week cause I spent some quality time with my son. The only thing what bothered me is i didnt get a chance to go to bible study :(. Whenever i miss a service or studies i feel ike i missed out on a whole bunch of teachings that are always beneficial. I've been going back and forth with Proverbs and Job and bought a new book as well so I can rewrite all the notes from my small memopad into a normal size book to get me back in the swing of things. I noticed that whenever you do research no matter what the topic is and your really interested, its hard to put the books down. I just completed my online app for university and feel good about it. I think im more ready to hit the books than i was before and using the motivation of "what are others doing and what can I do differently so i dont end up in a position where I'm not happy with myself".I been doing a lot to keep myself out of the bs and keeping myself in the loop with positive people and I'm seeing the results. We dont have time to waste no more cause each day that passes is another day where we learn and get older so its time to make it happen for real and not chill. We can chill when were accompl;ished until then, im a work like an ant and make sure my foundation is well solid. You know who you heard it from.

Good Afternoon Toronto,

A little wet outside but that wont stop the press as i gotta keep the ball rolling. The program is really in the swing of things nearing the two month mark and what can I say, time is really flying. It has to be one of those things, the ambassadors are getting comfortable with eachother but that doesnt necessarily mean that everything is gravy. If the program does live up to its expectations, there will be some bumps in the road that staff and the student placements gotta be ready for. From past experience I feel its important to give those a heads up especially the placements cause sometimes they might not know what to expect or there just might be a day when it gets super crazy,and to tell the truth those are the longest days. We had a couple like that already and boy lemme say,only word to describe it....NUTS. Well anyway its time to make a bnounce and cut so im a catch up with yall later.

Its been a crazy time for the country as they also had to come back from an earthquake which was pretty much overshadowed by the horrific events in Haiti. On a different note, today I'm gonna write about something dear to me which has become a vital way of expression for me from as long as I can remember. Besides doing this blog and freelance articles, I've been an emcee and the seeds for that artform were in me before I started to take my writing serious. While I was writing a progress report, i hit up a hip hop site and the topic of the day had something to do with my favorite artist, Nas. The same goes for one of hip-hop's younger gems in Lupe Fiasco and Atlantic Records. The trials and tribulations of an artist. The thing that these two artists have in common is the labels won't release their material. The only difference is Lupe's Fans made a petition But Nas took his public in the form of an open letter in a press conference. (Nas' Letter below)

I won’t even tap dance around in an email, I will get right into it. People connect to the Artist @ the end of the day, they don’t connect with the executives. Honestly, nobody even cares what label puts out a great record, they care about who recorded it. Yet time and time again its the executives who always stand in the way of a creative artist’s dream and aspirations. You don’t help draw the truth from my deepest and most inner soul, you don’t even do a great job @ selling it. The #1 problem with DEF JAM is pretty simple and obvious, the executives think they are the stars. You aren’t…. not even close. As a matter of fact, you wish you were, but it didn’t work out so you took a desk job. To the consumer, I COME FIRST. Stop trying to deprive them! I have a fan base that dies for my music and a RAP label that doesn’t understand RAP. Pretty fucked up situation

This isn’t the 90′s though. Beefing with record labels is so 15 years ago. @ this point I just need you all to be very clear where I stand and how I feel about “my label.” I could go on twitter or hot 97 tomorrow and get 100,000 protesters @ your building but I choose to walk my own path my own way because since day one I have been my own man. I did business with Tommy Mottola and Donnie Einer, two of the most psycho dudes this business ever created. I worked well with them for one major reason……. they believed in me. The didn’t give a fuck about what any radio station or magazine said….those dudes had me.

Lost Tapes is a movement and a very important set up piece for my career as it stands. I started this over 5 years ago @ Columbia and nobody knew what it was or what it did but the label put it out as an LP and the fans went crazy for it and I single handlely built a new brand of rap albums. It’s smart and after 5 years it’s still a head of the game. This feels great and you not feeling what I’m feeling is disturbing. Don’t get in the way of my creativity. We are aligned with the stars here, this is a movement. There is a thing called KARMA that comes to haunt you when you tamper with the aligning stars. WE ARE GIVING THE PEOPLE EXACTLY WHAT THEY WANT. Stop throwing dog shit on a MAGICAL moment.

You don’t get another Nas recording that doesn’t count against my deal….PERIOD! Keep your bullshit $200,000.00 fund. Open the REAL budget. This is a New York pioneers ALBUM, there ain’t many of us. I am ready to drop in the 4th quarter. You don’t even have shit coming out! Stop being your own worst enemy. Let’s get money!

I must admit that it's pretty sad that a legend like Nas, whose been in the game and is still very relevant has the executives standing in the way of music being released. All the execs are looking for nowadays is if you can make that one hit, they don't care about a complete body of work. As an artist, its a shame to see that the game can lose its integrity but for those who don't compromise their style, prove to critics their worth and have longevity. I hope that Lupe and Nas get the chance to release their product cause if they weren't nice at all, they would have no deal

Here is how the Toronto Mayoral candidates answered a single question: “How will you support youth employment and job skills development?”

Achampong: Only people living in Toronto can be hired by the city. A policy would give employers a tax break for hiring youths.

Smitherman: Announced a $10 million program earlier Thursday to give employers who hire youths 20 per cent of their minimum wage. Also vowed to force the city to use its spending clout to provide jobs for youths and to hold “senior bureaucrats responsible or we’ll fire them.”

Thomson: Create youth internships in all departments and agencies of the city.

Ford: Lower the business tax rate to help create more jobs in Toronto.

Rossi: Will create a “tax-competitive environment” and target employers in IT, green businesses and design.

Pantalone: Smitherman’s program copies what Toronto is already doing; will continue Toronto’s efforts to encourage businesses to hire youths.

A new report from the Canadian Council on Learning (CCL) provides an
unprecedented look at the future state of adult literacy in Vancouver,
Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, from 2001 through 2031.

Released to coincide with UNESCO International Literacy Day, The Future of
Literacy in Canada’s Largest Cities uses statistical projections to generate
literacy profiles for the country’s largest metropolitan areas. According to
the report, the four cities will experience significant, above-average
growth in the number of adults with low literacy in the coming decades.

Its the voice back at it like always and what I'm feeling right now is euphoric. My boy is having his celebration as he got married last week. The second one to do so out of my elementary school circle. I'm very proud of my boy's accomplishment and it has me wondering whose next to say "I do"...It might be me and I hope i do get married but for now lemme get myself in good shape with my career and things of that nature. As far as whats going on in the prorgam, same old same old...a lot of assessments are being done so it's a pretty strenuous time for case-managers cause they gotta complete this things and run group at the same time but thank God for our student placements who found a way to connect with the new ambassadors and keep them occupied. As for me, the day goes on and more work needs to be completed so I'm a get back to the task at hand. Please remember to get in where you fit in and always keep it moving. Save yourself the hassle and avoid trouble cause nothing has to happen if you arent in agreement with whats been done.

Before i get into the norm, I would like to acknowledge Cito Gaston. He found his way in Toronto in 1982 as the hitting coach. He came back in 1989 to take on the role as skipper and helped lead our Toronto Blue Jays to two World Series championships, four playoff appearances and a couple of penants, which in my eyes is enough work to get into Cooperstown. Cito, I may not know you personally but W wanna thank you for the memories that you provided our city but more importantly, the country. Hats off to one of the greatest.

This political history tour attempts to get you on your way to uncovering and developing a historical knowledge of York. York has, is
and always will be a contestable space, and is a space that will always need to be fought over.
As members of York'’s community we are responsible for the actions of the University and holding the University accountable for its actions.
Building resistance to inequities produced by and through the university cannot spring from no where. The history of successful resistance at
York goes back before the first buildings were built or the York University Act was introduced in 1959. Contemporary campaigns, actions, coalitions, and solidarities can be built on this tradition– or historical memory – of resistance and political organization. The tour guides will provide you with a brief history of political actions on campus to help you better understand the politics of education at York University and better strengthen historical memory.

The tour will take about 1.5 hours.

Speakers: Phil Monture, leading Six Nations land rights researcher; Missy Elliott, organizer with
Young Onkwehonwe United. Tom Keefer, a member of the CUPE 3903 FNSWG
Join us for a discussion of the historical background of colonization on the Haldimand tract and the
nature of contemporary indigenous resistance to it. Leading Six Nations land rights researcher will
explain how Six Nations was dispossessed of its lands, and Missy Elliott an organizer with Young
Onkwehonwe United will speak about current resistance to the land theft that is continuing today.
Tom Keefer will speak about the work that the CUPE 3903 First Nations Solidarity Network is doing
around building support for Six Nations in the non-native communities on the Haldimand tract.

This workshop will explore ideas about fat phobia and size acceptance
and how we can accept and celebrate all of our shapes and sizes! We
will bust myths about health and food, and speak about how bodily
control is used as a tool of oppression. We will challenge fat phobia
in various contexts while providing alternatives to the fat phobic,
malestream “norms”. We will have interactive activities and
discussions while remaining sex-positive, queer-positive and accepting
of all shapes and sizes. This workshop will be from a feminist
perspective and is open to everyone.

focus this year surrounds the prevalence of sexual assault on campus,
and the most recent release of the METRAC safety audit. Participants

through peer-education by other students, complete with an intro to

This film, shot by 100 amateur camera operators, tells the story of
the enormous street protests in Seattle, Washington in November 1999,
against the World Trade Organization summit being held there. Vowing
to oppose, among other faults, the WTO's power to arbitrally overrule
nations' environmental, social and labour policies in favour of
unbridled corporate greed, protestors from all around came out in
force to make their views known and stop the summit. Against them is a
brutal police force and a hostile media as well as the stain of a
minority of destructively overzealous comrades. Against all odds, the
protesters bravely faced fierce opposition to take back the rightful
democratic power that the political and corporate elite of the world
is determined to deny the little people.

Working through an anti-racist, queer and trans positive framework (as
I’ve found is rare in the bike world), this workshop will offer
participants a brief, concise, and useful overview of basic bicycle
maintenance, repair, and general information. We will go over bike
essentials, such as parts, necessary tools, and how to diagnose and
remedy common problems. As the number of cyclists on the road
increases, it is important for more cyclists to have a basic
understanding of their means of (sustainable yet fun!) transportation
for their own safety and others sharing the roads.

TURN IT UP: Media Justice, Community Radio & You

Step into the world of community radio and experience what "media
justice" could look like...This workshop is about how community radio
can be an allied and transformative tool for social justice.
In Part One, workshop participants can expect to learn about the
history and politics of community radio worldwide and locally. We will
be specifically discussing the current situation of media
concentration and a movement for media justice in Canada.
For Part Two of the workshop, we'll be hitting the streets collecting
sounds and voices of York campus and taking it all back to the studios
at CHRY 105.5 FM Community Radio to learn how to do basic audio
editing and production.

Join speakers from OCAP, Jane-finch action against poverty, and
Etobicoke who will be talking to about the current struggle against
poverty in Toronto: which includes the fight for adequate incomes,
against police brutality, and for housing especially in the new post
g-20 era of social cutbacks. We will collectively talk about
strategies of resistance, show video clips of different events, etc.

involved and the role of campus groups.

No One is Illegal Film: Continuous Journey (2004)

Continuous Journey is an inquiry into the largely ignored
history of Canada's exclusion of the South Asians by a little known
immigration policy called the Continuous Journey Regulation of 1908.
Unlike the Chinese and the Japanese, people from British India were
excluded by a regulation that appeared fair, but in reality, was an
effective way of keeping people from India out of Canada until 1948.
As a direct result, only a half-mile from Canadian shores, the
Komagata Maru was surrounded by immigration boats and the passengers
were held in communicado virtual prisoners on the ship. Thus began a
dramatic stand-off which would escalate over the course of two months,
becoming one of the most infamous incidents in Canadian history.

Catalyzing on new energy and excitement towards grassroots organizing
in Toronto, this workshop will help situate new organizers in the
types of social justice work they hope to do. We will look at locating
ourselves from an anti- colonial/ anti- oppressive standpoint, as well
as identify some of the key visions and goals that participants have
for their work. We will help participants assess their own skills and
goals and visions for moving forward. This workshop will be open to
all levels of experience, and will be a space for all participants to
exchange knowledge and stories with one another.

Although yesterday was a very soggy day, the good folks at CTI assembled a BTC all-star team which ran its first play out in the open for students to watch which was composed of a improv skit and some freeze theatre. As an organization this was a milestone for us because a lot agencies have burrowed from the BTC Manual but as innovators its our job to come up with something fresh and new to set ourselves apart from the rest. It really was time for us to flip the script and it worked to perfection. Now its time for us to make a splash in a bigger and better way.Special shout outs to Anthony, Dustin,Ramone,Mikey,Leroy, Jumoke and the York Students who participated in last night's historical event.

Simple Steps To Volunteering

I was brwosing the net the other day and I stumbled across something that would be real beneficial to students looking for a placement or just a way to gain some experience in the field you are considering a career for courtesy of Joanne Fritz so enjoy

7 Ways to Get the Most Out of Volunteering.

1. Decide what problem or issue you want to volunteer for.
Do you feel strongly about a particular problem or issue? Just to think, "Oh, well, volunteering would be a nice thing to do," isn't really enough. You might start, but will you stick with it? If you feel strongly about something, such as animals, homelessness, women's rights, poverty in your city, or helping children, then that is a very good sign and the start of a great volunteer experience.

2. Think about how much time you have to devote to volunteering.
Do you want something that is short and infrequent? Or could you donate a certain amount of time each week or month? This is something you'll want to share with the nonprofits you talk with. There are volunteer opportunities that can fit any time commitment, from being a Girl Scout leader for a school year to registering attendees at a charity event for a few hours. Nonprofits have become quite adept at tailoring volunteer opportunities to fit our modern lifestyles.

3. Contact those nonprofits that involve those issues you want to volunteer for.
Look up the organizations in your locale that deal with the issues you care about. Contact them and ask if they have any volunteer opportunities. You can also get an idea of what volunteer opportunities are out there by visiting the many online volunteer matching services.

***Contact one to three organizations and then visit them in person. Ideally, you'll meet with a volunteer coordinator and get a good idea of how the nonprofit works, the kinds of volunteer opportunities that are available, and how good a fit it is for your goals.

4. Look for a volunteer opportunity that will be fulfilling for you.
Volunteer work should not be entirely selfless. It is important that you enjoy what you are doing so that you will continue doing it. Think about what you like to do. Are you a "take charge" kind of person? If so, you won't be happy knocking on doors or stuffing envelopes. Look for leadership opportunities at nonprofits, such as serving on a board of directors, helping with fundraising, or organizing an event.

***On the other hand, you might not want something intellectually challenging. Perhaps you have enough of that in your own career and would like to so something simple but meaningful. Maybe you would enjoy cleaning up a vacant lot or planting a garden or signing people up for a charity run.

5. Match your skills with the volunteer opportunity.
Make a list of the things you are good at so that you can share them with the volunteer coordinators that you talk with. People who are sophisticated with computers, for instance, are in high demand at nonprofits. But your skills might be a facility with people, ability to do detailed work such as keeping meticulous records, hands-on ability such as carpentery or sewing, a talent with the written word, or public speaking.

6. Be prepared for the challenges of volunteering.
Boredom and impatience with the process are the biggest threats to a fulfilling volunteer experience. Some nonprofits will be disorganized and ill prepared for volunteers. Don't stay with that kind of situation. If they deserve you, they will be ready to use you effectively.

***If you work for a high-powered corporation, you may get impatient with the way things are done at a nonprofit. Try to refrain from telling them how to do their job.

***If you work with things instead of people, you may have to rethink how you operate. Working with people and their problems takes a different and more patient mindset.

7. Be open to the changes, especially in yourself, that volunteering will bring.
You may be challenged by having to deal with people who are less educated than yourself, from different backgrounds, and who are a different color. For sure, your stereotypes will crumble as you witness the dignity of all people no matter their circumstances.

These challenges are healthy ones and will result in your own personal growth if you persevere rather than run away at your first glimpse of life as others live it.
